As steam turbines age, the seals wear, causing excessive radial clearances that result in steam leakage. Worn conventional seals are typically and mainly caused by rubs that occur during start-up due to high vibration and thermal distortion. The end result is a bowed rotor, displacing the blades into the blade tip seals and compromising the tight efficient clearance. Steam leakage through seals that have worn to an excessive clearance condition will cause significant degradation in steam turbine efficiency and performance.
